Speech by Ambassador V.I.Sibilev at the Russian ballet performance Gaborone International Convention Centre, April 12, 2016

Honourable Dr Unity Dow, Minister of Education and Skills Development of the Republic of Botswana,

Esteemed Mr. Kagiso Molatlhegi, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly,

Senior representatives of governmental bodies and diplomatic corps,

Ladies and gentlemen,

Dear friends,

I am delighted to welcome you all to this very special performance by the renowned Russian troupe - the Royal Moscow Ballet. Today we have a rare opportunity to enjoy the finest show of classical ballet by world class masters.

The Royal Moscow Ballet was founded in 2002. Although the theatre is very new as compared to celebrated centuries-old Russian ballet houses such as Bolshoi and Mariinsky, it has quickly won the audience both in Russia and abroad. The repertoire of the Royal Ballet includes classical masterpieces as well as modern compositions.

The company have performed in lots of countries all over the world, with the total number of performances surpassing one thousand! In 2007 the Russian Ballet artists made two spectacular shows in Gaborone. During the current tour they give 7 performances in Southern Africa.

This ballet night should be considered as a gift to Batswana just a few months ahead of the 50th anniversary of the Republic's independence. Tonight's programme comprises three masterpieces: Chopiniana, otherwise known as Les Sylphides, followed by Carmen and Paquita Grand Pas.

The Russian ballet professionals also promote cultural education in various countries through master classes, including one in Botswana, thus familiarising public with all facets of classical dance.

We regard today's showby Royal Moscow Ballet as an important step in enhancing Russia-Botswana inter-cultural dialogue and fostering friendship between our nations. I am quite sure that this concert will become a remarkable event in the Botswana cultural life.

In conclusion I would like to thank OP Advertising and its Managing Director Francis Gleeson as well as Eduard Miasnikov Agency CC for their valued contribution to organizing the event and Peermont Group for providing the venue.

I wish you all a pleasant evening! Thank you!
