Ambassador Victor Sibilev of Russia says there are many opportunities for cooperation in water, power and infrastructure development between Botswana and Russia.

Mr Sibilev said this after presenting his letters of credence to President Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama at Office of President in Gaborone on September 29.

As such, he said his country was working on a plan to send to Gaborone a Russian business mission to be composed of representatives of core government ministries and private business under the umbrella of the Russian Chamber of Commerce next year.

He added that Botswana and Russia had common interests in diamond mining, thus additional options for cooperation. Also, he said the Russian Kristall Production Corporation; the major polishing and jewellery production enterprise in Europe has been actively involved in raw diamond sales in Gaborone and could offer unique experience in polishing technology and manufacture of jewellery to their Botswana counterparts.

Further, he said the Russian Company Norilsk Nickel had also implemented a number of mining and mineral processing projects in Botswana since 2007.

Mr Sibilev said Russia will expand the on-going skills upgrading courses for Botswana medical practitioners to new vital healthcare areas.

Thus, he said close to 50 Batswana have benefitted from such courses with the overall expenses borne by Russia exceeding half a million USD. Mr Sibilev said training of highly qualified specialists and skills-upgrading programmes for law enforcement officers has been of great benefit to Botswana by his country.

He further said the two countries have valuable relations in dialoguing on issues of international and African agenda within the United Nations and other fora.

“On a rotation basis in Moscow and in Gaborone we exchange views on key global and regional problems as well as maintain active collaboration within various international bodies.

What brings our countries closer is the common commitment towards ensuring global stability and security, sustainable development and establishment of fair international trade relations,” he said. Russia and Botswana relations have long standing ties that date back to 1970. Ends
